Tampa Speaks Out
OWNERSHIP HEARING 101:

Learn the FCC Basics
The FCC's rulemaking process and how you can make a difference.

What Should I Say?
Tips for testifying before the commissioners.

Four Points to Remember
Some important points to take to the hearings.

Read About the FCC's 'National Disgrace'
The FCC has abandoned its mandate to ensure diversity in U.S. media.

Recursos en Espanol

The FCC is holding its fourth official public hearing on media ownership issues in Tampa, Fla.:

Date: Monday, Apr. 30, 2007
Time: TBD (likely late afternoon)
Location: TBD

The hearing will feature panel presentations by local broadcasters and community leaders with opportunities for public comment after.

This public hearing is one of the public's few chances to speak out against Big Media before FCC Chairman Kevin Martin moves to lift the last significant limits to runaway media consolidation.

Martin has promised to "hold public hearings in diverse locations around the country to fully involve the American people" in the FCC's review of media ownership rules. The Tampa event will be the fourth of "half a dozen" proposed hearings.

At the first official hearing, held in Los Angeles, more than 1,000 members of the public attended and overwhelming expressed their opposition to any rule changes that would let Big Media companies swallow up more local outlets. Similar sentiments were expressed in Nashville and Harrisburg, Pa..

..

The F.C.C. wants to change the rules to let multibillion dollar media companies like News Corp, Viacom, Disney and Time Warner get even bigger. They're preparing to let giant media corporations buy up more local TV channels, radio stations and newspapers across America.

http://www.stopbigmedia.com/=fcc
Learn about the FCC's rules
..

The largest media conglomerates rake in billions by owning TV stations, cable channels, newspapers, radio stations, publishing houses and more.
Check out our interactive ownership chart
http://www.stopbigmedia.com/chart.php
What's at Stake
http://www.stopbigmedia.com/=learn

The Federal Communications Commission is once again taking up the issue of media ownership and deciding how media ownership rules should be changed. As FCC Commissioner Michael Copps has warned: "They screwed it up once. Believe me, they're 100 percent capable of screwing it up again."

That's why it's crucial for the public to weigh in now. Here's what's at stake:

* Big Media stifle viewpoints: If a corporation like News Corp. can buy multiple media outlets in a single city or town, it gains immense influence over what information is available. Consolidated corporations strip local newsrooms of staff, while pushing aside competing points of view. That means less diversity of voices and a narrower range of debate.

* Big Media don't serve local communities: In exchange for their free and exclusive use of the public airwaves, broadcasters such as Sinclair are supposed to serve the public interest. Yet they frequently ignore important local issues, pander to sensationalism, provide biased coverage of elections, and stifle diverse viewpoints.

* Big Media ignore diversity: Corporate media conglomerates like Tribune Company are more concerned with profits than responsible programming. Coverage of issues important to people of color, the working class and rural citizens are squelched or ignored because these people aren't advertisers' target audiences.

Without ownership limits, giant national corporations can buy up local stations and newspapers, eliminate diverse, local and independent programming. If the FCC is serious about fostering localism and diversity, it must enact protections against consolidated corporate ownership.

For decades, the biggest media companies have had the ear of the FCC and Congress, while the public has been ignored. As the FCC rewrites is ownership rules and Congress debates legislation that will shape the entire media system for years to come, it's time our policymakers listened to the public, not just the corporate lobbyists.
Costs of Consolidation
In 2003, the Federal Communications Commission attempted to loosen media ownership rules that would have unleashed a massive wave of corporate consolidation of radio, television and newspapers entities across the country.

The courts sent these rules back to the FCC for a rewrite. Now, as the FCC embarks upon writing new rules, the stakes are even higher:

* A handful of media companies dominate what you watch on television. As their influence spreads to other outlets, the diversity of what you see diminishes.

Five media conglomerates — Viacom/CBS, Disney, Time Warner, News Corp. and NBC/GE — control the big four networks, 80 percent of the primetime television market share, most cable channels, as well as vast holdings in radio, publishing, movie studios, music, Internet and other sectors. (To learn more, visit StopBigMedia.com's ownership charts)

Minority ownership — a crucial source of diverse and varied viewpoints -- has declined significantly over the past decade. Today, only 3.3% of television stations are minority-owned.

* Media conglomerates now stand to make incredible new profits from the public airwaves with no accountability to the public interest.

Over the next few years, television conglomerates will begin broadcasting digitally. This means that in the space it used to take to broadcast the local affiliate of ABC, NBC or CBS, these corporations will now be able to fit six or more stations — ABC-1, ABC-2, and so on. This opens up countless new revenue streams, and indeed, plans are already in the works to have infomercial-driven new channels pump up corporate profits.

The total worth of the publicly owned airwaves that U.S. broadcasters utilize has been valued at $367 billion -- more than the GDP of many nations — but the public has never been paid a dime in return. Now, these conglomerates claim they can't afford to be accountable to the public interest.

* Media consolidation has stifled independent voices and threatened public access to information.

Consolidation is killing local media choices. Since 1975, two-thirds of newspaper owners have disappeared, and one-third of television owners have vanished. There are less than 300 unique owners of the nation's 1,500 daily newspapers, and more than half of all U.S. markets are dominated by one paper.

Moreover, the number of radio station owners has plummeted by 35 percent since 1996, when ownership rules were gutted. That year, the largest radio owners controlled fewer than 65 stations; today, radio giant Clear Channel alone owns over 1,100.

* If the current ownership rules are eliminated, local communites will be turned into "company towns," where one media conglomerate dominates the public discourse.

Big Media wants the FCC to lift the restrictions on newspaper-broadcast cross-ownership and allow one company to own two or more television stations in a single market. If the rules are changed, the largest conglomerates will immediately begin swapping newspaper and television properties. Then the radio giants like Clear Channel will begin selling off their already consolidated radio holdings for billions to the other dominant companies, creating local and regional media fiefdoms.

If FCC Chairman Kevin Martin tries to push through changes similar to those rejected in 2003, one company could potentially own the major daily newspaper, eight radio stations and three television stations in the same town. Once the digital television transition is completed in 2009 – allowing stations to broadcast multiple signals – one company could control 12 or even 18 television channels in a single city.

Seeking Florida DJ Gig or exchange from Southern California (Jan 6th-10th)

Top Notch DJ from San Diego will be visiting Florida between the dates of January 6th - 10th, 2007. DJ Jack Tripper will be looking for a place to bring his music and a crowd to share his vibe. Flexible to the venue & location, pay rate can be negotiable. Will be staying in the Tampa area, however travelling to another major city in Florida is an option. Any opportunities are sincerely appreciated, and it could lead to another great opportunity in return. Burner friendly as well, so if you are part of the Burning Man community thats a big plus!

We can offer the potential of doing a gig exchange through this if you are ever in the San Diego/Southern California region. We throw a lot of parties and do promotions/DJ Bookings, so we can most likely help one another out through this by sharing cross-exposure. Our 'Turntable-Evangelism' events have a solid reputation and growing following for the caliber of talent we work with and quality of our productions. We’ve recently had the Autobots from the UK and the Destroyerz from British Columbia both grace our decks (both are Top Notch Breakbeat acts!). The sky is the limit for 2007 and we strive to give opportunities where they are lacking however we are able to assist.

Jack Tripper is an active name in the Southern California circuit, 11 years seasoned experience for a wide variety of DJ’ing notches under his belt. Strong technical presence coupled with superior crowd control abilities make him a DJ in high demand. Jack plays a wide range of music specializing in Peak hour Underground/Commercial Dance Club music from Breakbeats, Progressive, Tech-House, Elektrohouse, Vocal Trance, Hi NRG Dance, Funky & Deep House, Minimal Glitch Hop, PsyTrance, Drum & Bass, 60’s/70’s/80’s Club Remixes, and Mashups. As well as Trip Hop, Acid Jazz, Downtempo, and other music suited for Lounges, Chillrooms, or intimate afterhours affairs. With a growing repertoire of original remixes and exclusive unreleased music, he’s an established name in his region and growing contender in the national/international DJ circuits.

Please visit the websites for more detailed information about what we do. Jack Tripper’s homesite includes 7 demo mixes of various styles, galleries of past events, DJ resume of past events w/fliers and lineups, bio, and other info.

According to internet legend, crack squirrels have terrorised residents in New York and Washington. But is the Brixton crack squirrel real or an urban myth? The Guardian began its search for the freebasing fiend near the local cinema. "They used to hang out in the little park in front of the Ritzy, twitching ... dancing to music only they could hear and generally creating a malevolent ambience," Londoner Rik Abel wrote in his blog. Ritzy regulars were less sure. "I've never seen one," said a staff member. "But there might be crack foxes around too."
On Brixton Hill, Bim is not surprised by the spectre of the Brixton crack squirrel. "I've only been released from prison today but I've heard about the squirrels. They are scoffing all the crack, more stoned than me. Have you ever seen cats with hash? Cats always go for hash."

There is no sign of a squirrel half-crazed on Class As along Coldharbour Lane or Rush Common - but, finally, a possible sighting. "I've just seen one jump down from an old sunflower by the Seventh Day Adventist church," said Reg Throssell. "I locked eyes with it and it stared back at me really confidently. It was scavenging and it looked scrawny."

But Brixton crack squirrels need not worry about the police yet. "I've no knowledge of that at all," said a Scotland Yard spokesman, firmly.

SARPY COUNTY, Neb. -- Last week, two goats were found strangled, drained of blood, then positioned inside their pen. The Nebraska Humane Society's initial analysis was that the killings may have been performed by a cult, Omaha television station KETV reported.

Investigators said this week that they need new leads in the killings.

The goats' owners were devastated by the deaths. They said the goats were family pets.

Beth Roth said her four daughters played with the goats nearly every day for the year that they'd been caring for them. Last year, they even posed the goats for the family's Christmas card.

"They named these pets after my grandma and grandpa -- their great-grandma and grandpa -- Phyllis and Charlie," Roth said.

Roth said her daughters won Charlie at the county fair. Phyllis appeared a few weeks later.

"Goats are very sweet, fun pets. They're very mischievous. They like to play and escape out of the pen and get into things they're not supposed to," Roth said.

Roth talked about discovering the animals after they were attacked.

"We noticed when we pulled up, they weren't moving. Their bodies were posed in the same position next to each other," Roth said. "My kids were traumatized by this, and so am I. It's hard to sleep at night because I can't get the picture out of my mind of the goat's face when it died. You could tell they suffered."

Roth said the family drives by the farm every day, which upsets her children. She said they'd like to get more pets, but not until they know what happened to their goats.

"I can't have anything there until the person is caught. I can't put anything there because they might do it again, and I can't put an animal in harm's way," she said.

The Humane Society and the Sarpy County Sheriff's Department are investigating the case. They said they have few leads because the pen where the goats were killed was left very clean.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) -- A woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing a friend during an exorcism ritual, police said Thursday.

Justice Claudette Singh imposed the sentence late Wednesday, saying Patricia Alvez, 42, had been convicted "of a shocking crime which claimed the life of a woman she befriended."

A 12-member jury convicted Alvez of manslaughter last week for killing Kamille Seenauth, 34, on February 15, 2002. She allegedly beat Seenauth with an iron bar in an attempt to drive evil spirits out of her.

Seenauth's battered body was found in a shallow grave in Alves' backyard the day after the beating. Neighbors called police after seeing a foot sticking out of the ground.

Alvez ran what Guyanese call a "Spirit Church" from her home in the capital of Georgetown. Neighbors said they frequently called police to report screams coming from the house.

Some people, many of them women, turn to self-styled African or Hindu exorcists for spiritual help in this former British colony of 750,000 people. Lengthy prayers and ritual beatings are common during such sessions.

LONDON -- A chilly bit of Scandinavia is coming to the heart of London's West End Saturday with the opening of Absolut Icebar, a bar made entirely out of ice right down to the art on the walls and the glasses for the drinks.

Situated next to the accompanying but room temperature Below Zero restaurant, the bar is kept at minus 23 fahrenheit year round. For a cover charge of 12 pounds ($22.20), patrons are given a thermal cape, thick gloves and a glass made out of ice before entering the second of two airtight doors designed to keep heat out.

"It's an experience rather than a traditional bar. We feel we're really offering something different," said Anette Eliasson, manager of market communications for V&S Absolut Spirits vodka company, which is opening the bar with partner company Icehotel.

The Stockholm-based franchise launched the first Icebar in Jukkasjarvi, Sweden, in 1994 within Icehotel, where visitors stay in the comfort of a warm sleeping bag in an icy room. Since then, Icebar locations in Stockholm, Sweden and Milan, Italy, have been met with success, prompting a fourth permanent location in London.

"This is where trends come from, so that's why London was important to us," Agnetha Lund, director of Icebar International, said.

Bar patrons who would like a warm meal will find European cuisine and lounge-style seating at Below Zero restaurant next door. Fred Olsson, managing director, said the menu features dishes that can be shared among friends.

All the ice for the bar is imported from the Torne River in the north of Sweden, where the pure water and river freezing process make the finished product "crystal clear," according to Lund.

The entire venue will be redesigned and rebuilt every six months, because the ice will gradually melt with daily use and the body heat of the crowds, Lund said. Icebar commissions artists to sculpt the decor on site, and opening day art includes a floor-to-ceiling vodka bottle and partial human figures along the walls.

The 10,764-square-foot bar has a capacity for 60 people. Pre-booking for one of the 45-minute time slots is a must.

France has reacted with horror as details emerged this week of the twin suicide of two teenage girls who bound their hands together and jumped from the 17th-storey window of a block of flats in Paris.

The 14-year old girls, who have been named only as Marion and Virginie, were both heavily influenced by the gothic fashion in music and clothes.

Friends said they were obsessed by talk of death, and the weblog kept by one of the girls contained long and morbid extracts from the lyrics of a leading French black metal band.

On Sunday, the pair's school friends gathered for a brief memorial service at the foot of the tower block in Ivry-sur-Seine, a southern suburb of the capital.

One of them - named in French newspapers as Benjamin - described how Marion and Virginie joined him and a friend in his top-floor apartment on Friday afternoon.

"They said to us: 'Wait there, we are going into the bedroom. We are going to give you a surprise.'

"Then they said: 'Come in!' And then we saw them on the window ledge. We couldn't do anything. They just jumped," he said.

A suicide note was found in one of their pockets. It read: "Life isn't worth it."

'Not happy'

The story has provoked widespread shock because the girls were from very average middle-class homes, in a very average suburban neighbourhood.

Though they had attracted attention for their black clothes and brooding personalities, no-one imagined for a minute that their alienation from the world was so extreme.

According to newspaper reports, the two girls ran away from home early last week.

She was permanently humiliated. Everyone made fun of her clothes

Melisa

They were found by local police who questioned them and found nothing unusual about their manner.

Friends said Marion had often pronounced an intention to kill herself, but no-one had taken her seriously.

"It was clear she wasn't happy," a girl called Melisa told France Soir newspaper.

"Like me she dressed in gothic outfits. But she got teased mercilessly for it. She was permanently humiliated. Everyone made fun of her clothes."

Perhaps the biggest clue to Marion's confusion can be found on her weblog, part of which has been transferred to a tribute website set up by her friends.

In it, she delivers an angry and self-hating stream of consciousness based around sex, beauty and death, interspersed with lyrics from the French black metal group, Anorexia Nervosa.

Violent lyrics

The group from the central town of Limoges - one of whose albums is called Suicide is Sexy - has a loyal following among a section of French youth. Its lyrics are hard-hitting.

"I hate you. I vomit on your soul and your family. Death to your parents. Torture and rape to your children. I hate you to death," are the words of one song on Marion's weblog.

"You are the whore of human weakness. Tepid and obscene. Blinded by the sweaty desire of vanity. Worthless."

All sorts of music have driven people to extremes of behaviour. Not just black metal

Jeff Veillet
Rock One magazine

Another reads: "I can't take any more. I have had enough. I have burned my eyes and I am afraid."

In Britain and the US, campaigners for family values have long complained about the content of black metal and death metal songs, alleging that their violent and death-obsessed lyrics can tip the sensitive into self-destruction.

Jeff Veillet, of leading French rock magazine Rock One, defended Anorexia Nervosa from charges that it is playing a dangerous game with the insecurities of teenage girls.

"Yes, there is a provocative side to groups like Anorexia. But just because they talk about death in their songs, it doesn't mean they want people to commit suicide. It is an act - a way of getting through to adolescents," he said.

"All sorts of music have driven people to extremes of behaviour. Not just black metal."

LONDON -- Move over, Eros. Developers announced plans Friday to open a multimillion dollar sexual "theme park" near London's Piccadilly Circus, home to the much-photographed statue of the Greek god of love.

Backers say the London Academy of Sex and Relationships, due to open next spring, will not be a sleazy sex museum, but an educational multimedia attraction that will teach visitors to become better lovers and provide valuable information about disease and sexual problems.

Located within the Trocadero entertainment center _ just around the corner from Soho, London's red-light district _ the $8.3 million project will feature unspecified "high tech and interactive exhibits."

Alex Rayner, a spokesman for the project, said it was "committed to avoiding the sleazy image that the sex industry usually conjures."

"Titillation is not the goal," he said. "It's meant to be educational. It's meant to be informative."

The privately funded project has support from sexual health organizations including the Sexual Dysfunction Association and AIDS charity The Terrence Higgins Trust.

"It is long overdue that the U.K. faces up to its responsibilities in the sexual arena _ we cannot simply avoid mankind's leading preoccupation and the issues that go with it," said the academy's director of exhibits, Dr. Sarah Brewer. "The academy is the perfect vehicle by which to address these important matters in an exciting, amusing and yet educational way."

Several cities around the world _ including New York, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Paris _ are home to erotic museums. Typically, they exhibit everything from pornography to high-minded paintings exploring local sexual attitudes and culture.

Thu Sep 15, 1:04 PM ET
NEWARK, N.J. - Three mice infected with the bacteria responsible for bubonic plague apparently disappeared from a laboratory about two weeks ago, and authorities launched a search though health experts said there was scant public risk.

The mice were unaccounted-for at the Public Health Research Institute, which is on the campus of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and conducts bioterrorism research for the federal government.

Federal official said the mice may never be accounted for. Among other things, the rodents may have been stolen, eaten by other lab animals or just misplaced in a paperwork error.

If the mice got outside the lab, they would have already died from the disease, state Health Commissioner Fred Jacobs said.

The possibility of theft prompted the institute to interrogate two dozen of its employees and conduct lie detector tests, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported Thursday.

The FBI said it was investigating. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is also investigating, the newspaper reported.
University officials did not immediately return a call seeking comment Thursday morning.
The mice were injected as part of an inoculation and vaccination experiment, investigators said.

Health officials say 10 to 20 people in the United States contract plague each year, usually through infected fleas or rodents. It can be treated with antibiotics, but about one in seven U.S. cases is fatal. Bubonic plague is not contagious, but left untreated it can transform into pneumonic plague, which can be spread from person to person.

The incident came as federal authorities investigate possible corruption in the school's finances. The FBI is reviewing political donations and millions of dollars in no-bid contracts awarded to politically connected firms.

Wednesday, September 14, 2005; Posted: 10:28 p.m. EDT (02:28 GMT)
BERLIN, Germany (Reuters) -- A German inventor has angered animal rights activists with his answer to fighting the soaring cost of fuel -- dead cats.

Christian Koch, 55, from the eastern county of Saxony, told Bild newspaper that his organic diesel fuel -- a homemade blend of garbage, run-over cats and other ingredients -- is a proven alternative to normal consumer diesel.

"I drive my normal diesel-powered car with this mixture," Koch said. "I have gone 170,000 km (106,000 miles) without a problem."

The Web site of Koch's firm, "Alphakat GmbH", says his patented "KDV 500" machine can produce what he calls the "bio-diesel" fuel at about 23 euro cents (30 cents) a liter, which is about one-fifth the price at petrol stations now.

Koch said around 20 dead cats added into the mix could help produce enough fuel to fill up a 50-liter (11 gallon) tank.

But the president of the German Society for the Protection of Animals, Wolfgang Apel, said using dead cats for fuel was illegal.

"There's no danger for cats and dogs in Germany because this practice is outlawed in Germany," Apel told Bild on Wednesday in a story entitled "Can you really make fuel out of cats?"

"We're going to keep an eye on this case," Apel said.

POSTED: 2:46 pm EST February 21, 2005

MIAMI -- Prisoners from all over Florida are scamming residents to make long-distance calls.

Officials say jail inmates make collect calls, then persuade the person on the line to push star-72 and the number to the pay phone at the jail. That forwards the line to the jail pay phone and gives the inmate access to the residential line to make calls.

Miami-Dade County jail spokeswoman Janelle Hall said authorities have received calls from victims weekly for about a year. She said some were scammed out of hundreds of dollars in long distance calls.

The spokeswoman noted that the jail has added a warning to its collect call message that says dialing star-72 could make the person a victim of a scam. But victims don't pay attention to the message.

Hall said the scam also happens at other jails.

THIS BULLSHIT JUST HAPPENED TO ME.
I DONT NEED THIS SHIT!!

a 1928 broadway hit and a classic of early 20th century feminist theater, MACHINAL is an expressionistic modern age tragedy of isolation turned to murder. the play, sophie treadwell said, is about "a young woman, ready, eager for life, for love...but deadened, squeezed, crushed by the machine like quality of the life surrounding."
loosely based on the sensational 1927 murder trial of ruth snyder (the first woman put to death by the electric chair) and set against an industrial landscape, Treadwell uses this scenario as a springboard for her own speculations about what circumstances might drive a seemingly harmless stenographer to commit murder in a male-dominated, mechanized, materialistic world.
